Disk

What Is Disk?

Disk is the view tab that gathers the storage state of the device on a single screen on the TR7 home page. The tab consists of two groups: the three common panels that list all the storage areas on the device side by side in a single table and the five panels produced separately for every storage area. The common panels read the capacity and the occupancy rates, and the panels per area the read-write performance of that area.

While the other tabs of the home page read the totals of the vService, WAF, AGS or DNS service traffic, this tab reads the own hardware measurements of the device. For this reason there is no scope upper row such as All vServices or All DNS Services in the title of the panels and no vService Distribution table that offers a vService breakdown takes place in the panels. This tab is only for monitoring: the deletion of the log files, the automatic cleaning threshold and the file management are done on the Disk Management screen.

All of the panels are bound to the Settings permission. The panel number of the tab changes according to the number of storage areas in the hardware definition of the device: in addition to the three common panels, five panels are produced for every area. The names of the areas in the interface are Root disk, Service disk and Data disk; on a device with three areas the tab opens with 18 panels.

Access to the Disk Tab

  1. The Home shortcut on the left of the Header Bar is clicked.
  2. Disk is selected from the view tabs.

The tab does not have a subtab, so the second row of the tab bar is not displayed. For the Header Bar shortcuts, see Header Bar.

The Disk TabThe Disk Tab

The screen controls are common to all the tabs

The time range selector, the refresh, the settings, the template menu and the arrangement of the panels are the same in all the view tabs of the home page; for the detail, see Screen Controls.

Panels

The Disk tab first lays out the three common panels: Disk Capacity, All disk usages and All disk inodes usage. Then the five panel types are handled in order and every type is repeated for all the storage areas: first the Disk I/O - Latency panel of every area, then the Disk I/O - IOPS panel of every area, then the Disk I/O - Throughput, Disk Space and Inodes panels. On a device with three areas the order continues in the Disk Capacity, All disk usages, All disk inodes usage, Disk I/O - Latency - Root disk, Disk I/O - Latency - Service disk, Disk I/O - Latency - Data disk, Disk I/O - IOPS - Root disk form.

The tab and all of the panels are bound to the Settings permission; in a user who does not have this permission the tab does not take place among the view tabs at all. There is no conditional panel in the tab bound to the device type, to the license or to a feature being on: the same panels are produced both on a virtual machine and on a physical device. The only variable that determines the panel number is the number of storage areas in the hardware definition; an area that is defined but has no counterpart on the device does not enter the list at all and the five panels of that area are not produced either.

All of the panels are by default one card wide and one card high; no panel demands a different row or column width in its own definition. The card width changes according to the screen width: as many columns as the number of cards that fit side by side are opened and the cards fill the column. When the panel title is hovered over, the short explanation of the definition is displayed as a tooltip.

The Add Visualization menu offers the same panels on this tab; there is no other storage panel that can be added to the tab and no panel that does not enter the default layout takes place in the menu. A panel selected from the menu can be added a second time even if it is already present in the layout. The Disk Usage and Inode Usage panels, which show the occupancy and the file record rate of a single storage area as separate cards, are not listed in the menu of this tab; both panels are added only from the Add Visualization menu of the Summary tab, and of these only Disk Usage is additionally offered as a Header Bar widget.

The summaries that can be opened in the panels in this tab change according to the value the panel measures: in the rate and space panels Last value, Avg. value and Max. value are offered, and in the speed panels, in addition to these, Total, which gives the window total. The Min. value summary is offered in none of the storage panels. A closed summary is listed in the strip under the panel with its own general name; when it is opened, it takes the own label of the panel. For this reason in the latency panel the closed summaries are read as Last value and Max. value and the open summary as Avg. time.

Disk Capacity

InfoGB

Lists the capacity of the storage areas of the device row by row: Root disk, Service disk, Data disk and at the very bottom Total. The values are not a time series but fixed information read from the hardware definition of the device; for this reason the panel is not affected by the time range selection and no chart view is offered in the panel.

The Total row is not the sum of the areas listed: it shows the total capacity of the physical disks installed on the device. Since a part of this capacity is not allocated to the storage areas, the Total value can be larger than the sum of the rows above. The same value also takes place in the Disk info row of the Device info panel in the Summary tab.

In the cluster setups the panel opens with two columns and the capacity of every device is listed in a separate column; if the value of the two devices is equal, the row is reduced to a single column. In the users of the Cloud Client type the capacity rows and the Total row are not displayed at all.

All disk usages

Stat table%

Lists the occupancy rate of all the storage areas on the device in a single table. Every storage area is a series and the series name is the own name of the area: Root disk, Service disk, Data disk. The value is the ratio of the used part of the area to the total capacity and it sits on a fixed axis between 0 percent and 100 percent.

In the default Stat Table view all three of the summary columns come open: Last value, Avg. value and Max. value. The header of the first column of the table is Metric and the rows preserve the area order. To the left of every value the moment at which that value was read is written relatively (such as Just now, ~16h ago). The values are colored according to the thresholds: up to 80 percent they take the color of the normal band, between 80 percent and 90 percent of the warning band, and at 90 percent and above of the danger band. The coloring does not make a gradual transition, it jumps to the color of the band the moment the value passes the threshold.

In the panel, the Digital, Line Chart, Stat Table and Arc Gauge views are offered. In the cluster setups all four of the views show the areas of every device separately, the values are not summed and not averaged. The same definition also feeds the Disks widget of the Header Bar; the widget prints the last values of the areas in a single row in the Root disk | Service disk | Data disk form.

The panel title is printed in lowercase letters in the interface

The All disk usages and All disk inodes usage titles are fixed texts that come not from the dictionary but from the panel definition; for this reason they are displayed in English and in lowercase letters no matter what the interface language is. The title tooltip of the panel repeats the same text as well.

All disk inodes usage

Stat table%

Lists the file record (inode) occupancy of all the storage areas in a single table. A storage area counts as full not only when its capacity is filled but also when the number of file records it can hold is exhausted; this panel reads the second limit. In the setups that produce a large number of small files, this rate rises before the occupancy rate.

Every storage area is a series and the series name is the own name of the area. The Y axis is fixed between 0 percent and 100 percent. In the default Stat Table view all three of the Last value, Avg. value and Max. value columns come open; the threshold coloring is the same as the All disk usages panel and makes a step at the 80 percent and 90 percent limits.

In the panel, the Line Chart, Stat Table and Arc Gauge views are offered; the Digital view is not present in this panel. In the cluster setups all three of the views show the areas of every device separately.

Disk I/O - Latency

Line chartms

Shows the average duration of the read and write operations on a storage area as milliseconds. The card title is completed with the area name: Disk I/O - Latency - Root disk, Disk I/O - Latency - Service disk, Disk I/O - Latency - Data disk. The value is found by the total duration of the operations completed in the measurement interval being divided by the number of operations; in the intervals in which no operation takes place, zero is written.

SeriesMeaning
Read LatencyThe average duration of a completed read operation.
Write LatencyThe average duration of a completed write operation.

In the default Line Chart view, as a summary, only Avg. time comes open; Last value and Max. value are opened from the strip under the panel. The Y axis starts from zero and its upper limit is scaled according to the data. The MAX badge to the left of the legend strip adds behind the averaged line the band that consists of the highest values of the same period; thus the short-lived jumps stay visible in the wide time ranges.

In the panel, the Digital, Line Chart and Stat Table views are offered. In the cluster setups the combining depends on the view: while Line Chart averages the value of the two devices, Digital and Stat Table show every device separately. Threshold coloring is not applied in the panel.

Disk I/O - IOPS

7:10 DigitalOperations/sec

Shows the number of read and write operations completed per second on a storage area. The card title is completed with the area name, such as Disk I/O - IOPS - Root disk. The value the panel measures is not the amount of data transferred but the number of operations; the data transferred is read in the Disk I/O - Throughput panel.

SeriesMeaning
Reads/sThe number of read operations completed per second.
Writes/sThe number of write operations completed per second.

In the default Digital view three summary sections come open: Last value, Avg. value and Total. Total is the total number of operations completed in the selected time range; Max. value is opened from the strip. The values are printed with at most two decimal places.

In the panel, the Digital, Line Chart and Stat Table views are offered. In the cluster setups Line Chart sums the value of the two devices, and Digital and Stat Table show every device separately.

Disk I/O - Throughput

Line chartMB/s

Shows the amount of data read and written per second on a storage area. The card title is completed with the area name, such as Disk I/O - Throughput - Root disk. While the Disk I/O - IOPS panel counts the number of operations, this panel measures the data those operations carry; the two panels being read together shows whether the operation size is small or large.

SeriesMeaning
Read MB/sThe amount of data read per second.
Write MB/sThe amount of data written per second.

In the default Line Chart view, as a summary, only Total data comes open: this summary, which gives how much data has been carried in total in the selected time range, is printed not with the speed unit but with the data amount unit. The three summaries that come closed are listed in the strip as Last value, Avg. value and Max. value; when they are opened by being clicked, they take the names Last data/s, Avg. data/s and Max. data/s. The MAX badge to the left of the legend strip adds the highest value band.

In the panel, the Line Chart, Stat Table and Bar Chart views are offered; in the Bar Chart view the read and write series are grouped as vertical bars side by side. In the cluster setups Line Chart sums the value of the two devices, and Stat Table and Bar Chart show every device separately.

Disk Space

Line chartGB

Shows the used and the free part of a storage area not as a percentage but as an amount of data. The card title is completed with the area name, such as Disk Space - Root disk. The upper limit of the Y axis is the total capacity of that area, for this reason the panel makes how much of the capacity has been exhausted read directly.

SeriesMeaning
UsedThe used part of the area.
AvailableThe part of the area that can be allocated for new data.

In the default Line Chart view the two series are shown as stacked areas, for this reason the MAX band is not offered in this panel. As a summary, only Avg. value comes open; Last value and Max. value are opened from the strip. Since a part of the capacity is reserved for the system, the sum of the Used and Available series may not reach the upper limit of the axis; since the occupancy rate does not count this reserved part as used, the percentage in the All disk usages panel is read a little lower than the ratio of these two series.

In the panel, the Digital, Line Chart and Stat Table views are offered. In the cluster setups all three of the views show the value of every device as a separate series.

Inodes

Line chartRecord count

Shows the file record capacity of a storage area not as a rate but as a number. The card title is completed with the area name, such as Inodes - Root disk. The upper limit of the Y axis is the total file record capacity of that area and the values are printed without decimals.

SeriesMeaning
Used InodesThe number of file records used.
Free InodesThe number of file records that stay free.

In the default Line Chart view the two series are shown as stacked areas and the MAX band is not offered in this panel. As a summary, only Avg. value comes open; Last value and Max. value are opened from the strip. In the cluster setups the value of every device is shown as a separate series.

This panel is the only panel in the tab that offers a single view: since only Line Chart takes place in its definition, the view type icons are not displayed in the card title. The rate equivalent of the same value is present in the All disk inodes usage panel.

Scope and Limits

INFO

  • The tab is displayed only with the Settings permission. All of the panels are bound to the same permission; in a user who does not have this permission the tab does not take place among the view tabs at all. The visibility of the tab does not look at the device type, the license or the number of defined vServices.
  • The panel number depends on the number of storage areas. The tab opens with three common panels and with five panels for every storage area; there is no other conditional panel. The area list is produced from the hardware definition of the device, it is not changed from the interface.
  • The space measurements and the performance measurements are in different scopes. The occupancy, capacity and file record panels measure every storage area separately. The read-write panels, on the other hand, measure the physical disk on which the area is located, so the Disk I/O panels of the storage areas that stand on the same physical disk show the same values.
  • Add Visualization does not offer a new panel on this tab. There is no storage panel other than the own panels of the tab in the menu. The Disk Usage and Inode Usage panels, which show the occupancy of a single area, are added only from the menu of the Summary tab; for the processor, memory and network panels the related tabs are used.
  • The combining in a cluster changes according to the panel and the view. In the occupancy, file record, capacity and space panels the value of every device is shown separately. In the Disk I/O panels the combining depends on the view: the Line Chart view sums the value of the two devices in the operation and transfer panels and averages it in the latency panel; the Digital, Stat Table and Bar Chart views show every device separately. To see the values of a single device, the source selection in the settings is used; the options are the names of the two devices and Both devices.
  • The counters are read in two-second rounds and written into the fifteen-second archive. All the measurements that feed this tab are taken from the device once every two seconds; the finest resolution of the archive is fifteen seconds. The equivalent of the per-second resolution in the processor tab is not present in the storage measurements.
  • The fine-resolution history is limited. All the panels in the tab go three days back at the fifteen-second resolution, 14 days at the per-minute resolution, 60 days at the five-minute resolution, 180 days at the fifteen-minute resolution and two years at the hourly resolution; the older ranges are stored with a coarsening resolution for up to ten years.
  • The Min. value summary is not offered. None of the storage panels offers the lowest value summary; the summaries that can be opened are Last value, Avg. value, Max. value and, in the speed panels, Total. For this reason the legend badge also offers only the MAX band.
  • The appearance of an empty panel changes according to the card type. If there is no value in the selected time range, No data is displayed in the Digital view and No-data in the Arc Gauge and Bar Chart views; if a measurement has never been recorded, the text No data recorded for the selected time range. is printed inside the card.
  • The Header Bar widgets read the same definitions. The Disks widget in the Header Bar is fed from the definition of the All disk usages panel, and the Root disk, Service disk and Data disk widgets from the occupancy definition of the areas one by one; for the detail, see Header Bar.
  • The warning and the cleaning are not done on this screen. A notification being produced when the occupancy threshold is exceeded takes place on the Notification Management screen, the automatic deletion of the old logs in the Auto Disk Cleanup setting, and the area-based occupancy list and the file management in the Disk State tab.
  • There is no passing to another screen from the cards. Clicking a series name only hides or shows that series; no link to another screen is offered for detailed storage information.
