sys-cmd extend-data-disk

sys-cmd extend-data-disk starts an interactive wizard in WEB-CLI that finds a new and empty disk attached to the virtual machine and adds it to the data disk on which TR7 keeps the logs, graphs and temporary files. After the disk is added, the size of the data disk grows without an interruption.

Command Summary

TR7 WEB-CLI · sys-cmd extend-data-disk
# type extend-data-disk and press Tab: --scan, the only option, is completed
admin@TR7LBWAF01> sys-cmd extend-data-disk --scan

admin@TR7LBWAF01> sys-cmd extend-data-disk
admin@TR7LBWAF01>
FieldWhat it doesWhat is written after it
--scanBefore searching for the disks, it makes the system rescan the disk controllers; it is needed for a disk added while the virtual machine is running to appear. The text in the Tab help: Performs SCSI host rescan before scanning disks (may be required for ESXi)No value is written

There is no other mandatory or optional field.

The Wizard Steps

  1. The new disk is added to the virtual machine. The disk is added to the virtual machine on the virtualization platform (e.g. VMware ESXi). There must be no partition or file system on the disk.

  2. The wizard is started. If the disk was added while the virtual machine was running, it is started with --scan.

  3. The selected disk is verified. The wizard shows the current state of the data disk and the first empty disk it has found.

  4. Confirmation is given. For the Proceed? (y/N): question, y or Y is written. Any other answer exits with the Cancelled. message and nothing changes.

  5. The result is seen. The disk is added to the data disk and the New DATA DISK: line shows the new size.

How It Works

SubjectBehavior
Disk selectionDisks that have no partition or file system on them are searched for, and when they are sorted by name the first one is selected. The system disk is never selected.
InteractionIt opens a full terminal session; the question is answered on the wizard's own line. A pipe cannot be used: "Pipe" operator is not allowed after interactive commands.
ContextThe command runs within the selected v-device and route table; for the device's own data disk it is run while the context is Host.
RecordingEvery run is written to the user logs.

The Error Messages

MessageMeaning and solution
ERROR: Available free disk not found. No empty disk was found. If the disk is not visible yet, it is tried again with --scan; if the disk has been used before, the partitions on it are cleaned on the virtualization side or a new disk is added.
Cancelled. An answer other than y was given to the confirmation question; no change was made.
The other messages that begin with ERROR: …The data disk is not in the expected structure or the operation failed at a step; the TR7 support team is contacted without running the command again.

Things to Know

It cannot be undone

The disk that is added becomes a part of the data disk; it cannot be detached afterwards. If this disk is deleted on the virtualization side or removed from the virtual machine, the data disk is corrupted.

  • That the correct disk has been selected is verified from the size on the Selected disk: line; if the size is not the expected one, it is exited with N.
  • How full the data disk is and its cleanup are followed from the Disk Management page.
  • The size of the temporary file area is changed not with this command but with file disk change-size.
